5:00 pm - 8:00 pm ::PUBLIC:: Wetlands - Historical Conditions are the Path to a Successful (Wetter) Future

Join us at The Pine Room for a Social Hour followed by catered dinner and presentation by US Fish & Wildlife Service Biologist John Vradenburg. John is the Supervisory Biologist stationed at the Klamath Basin NWR Complex and recently gave this presentation at the 2023 Winter Wings Festival.

The Western United has been impacted exceptionally hard because of long-standing drought conditions. Across the Pacific Flyway this has had dramatic impacts on wetlands, particularly perennial wetland systems which are critical to waterbirds, fish, and numerous wetland dependent species. What the drought is clearly telling us is that our long-standing beliefs and practices around water security have pushed these systems towards conditions that are vulnerable to climatic variability. Using the Klamath Basin as an example we will discuss how changes in the landscape have transformed the system’s ability to be resilient to changing climate conditions and water availability. Importantly, how re-engaging natural (historical) conditions is the best opportunity for the ecosystem, species, and people.

Saturday June 10th

9:00 am - 2:00 pm Migrate Through Malheur

Members and the Visiting Public are welcome to Migrate Through Malheur and connect with volunteer Docents at key Birding Hotspots. Docents will be knowledgeable about bird sightings, natural and cultural history of the Refuge, and the important work the Friends of Malheur NWR are engaged in to support these wild spaces and the wildlife that depend on it.
Grab a Migration Map to collect stamps from our volunteers at each spot to earn 10% off at the Crane's Nest Nature Store!
